SOMAYAMPALAYAM

This village stands a shining example of Rotary Saicity's service to the community. A community hall, a school building proudly displaying the name PAUL HARRIS ANNEXE, a beautiful park which also houses a children's play area, two temples renovated by Rotary Saicity, a bus shelter, a borewell pump and a water tank are among the many landmarks having the stamp of service of Rotary.

This year Saicity proposes to provide a second borewell with an overhead water tank at a cost of Rs. 3 lakhs. This will be executed in cooperation with the civic administration. Uniforms and books are distributed free to the children of the Government primary school in the village. Free medical treatment to the villagers including surgery is being continued in Rotary Saicity medical centre.

ADOPTION OF 50 NOON MEAL CENTRES

Tamil Nadu boasts of this greatest internationally acclaimed sheme called 'Mid-day meal scheme' in the primary schools. This free noon meal scheme for the school children has enabled millions of poor parents to send their children to the school instead of making them earn their living by sending them for work at a very tender age. These noon meal centres attached to the primary schools, set up in 1985 are in poor maintenance and need renovation. Rotary Saicity has taken up this yeomen service of renovating 50 of these in collaboration with the district administration at a total cost of Rs. 8 lakhs.

ROTARY GIFT OF LIFE

The Gift of Life is a crusade of the heart, touching children in peril. The project christened as Rotary Gift of Life concerns the poor and needy children in and around Coimbatore, a city in Rotary District 3200, who are born with congenital heart diseases. It is estimated that nearly 2,50,000 children with congenital heart diseases are born each year in India. And of this, nearly 80,000 die each year before their first birth anniversary because their parents are poor and cannot afford the cost of treatment.

The Project aims to conduct free heart surgery on 25 such poor children and give them the most precious gift of all, namely the gift of life itself.

The identification of the patients is already done through an organization called Kovai Heart Foundation, a non profit organization. They have conducted several heart check up camps in and around Coimbatore, screened 24181 children and identified 187 patients so far. Surgery of 25 of these patients will be covered under this project.

The surgery will be performed by the team of doctors from Kovai Heart Foundation in “Kovai Medical Centre  Hospital, a well equipped modern hospital in Coimbatore run by US based non-resident Indians.

Funds from State and Federal Governments will also be availed so that funds from Rotary can be used for as many number of patients as possible and can be taken as a continuous on-going project to cover as many such poor patients as possible.

Rotary District 7250, New York, USA is partnering us in this venture through their trust called Gift of Life Inc., along with Rotary Club of Coimbatore East.

The total contribution of Rotary for The Project is US $ 50000.
